An intraocular lens (IOL) is a clear, artificial lens implant used to replace a cloudy natural lens in cataract and RLE surgery.
Like your eye's natural lens, an IOL focuses light that comes into your eye through the cornea and pupil onto the retina, the sensitive tissue at the back of the eye that relays images through the optic nerve to the brain. Most IOLs are made of a flexible, foldable material and are about one-third of the size of a small coin. Like the lenses of prescription eyeglasses, your IOL will contain the appropriate prescription to give you the best vision possible.
High Definition Monofocal IOLs
High Definition Monofocal lenses are designed to provide clear vision at distance. This lens is excellent for distance-vision activities like driving, sporting events, viewing scenery and watching TV. However, these lenses do not provide intermediate or near vision, so recipients will need glasses to focus on closer activities such as computer work, cooking, and reading a book.
Enhanced Lifestyle IOLs
Our Enhanced Lifestyle lenses are designed to help you see objects at the end of your arm and beyond. This lens gives you excellent, high-quality distance and arms-length (intermediate) vision. This means you will be able to see in the distance while driving as well as the dashboard. Recipients will still require glasses for near and close activities such as reading.
Extended Range IOLs
Our Extended Range lenses include multifocal and extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) options. These lenses use technology to help you see at a range of distances, providing clear vision to watch the TV in the distance, the computer at intermediate, as well as some nearer objects like your phone, puzzles and menus. While the need for glasses will be substantially reduced, they may still be required for some reading or precision activities (ie sewing, reading fine print, and tying fishing hooks). Recipients of these lenses should be aware that they may experience halos and glare in some conditions, including low light/contrast environments.
Toric Variants
Toric variants of our lenses are able to accommodate for the condition of astigmatism. Toric lenses are specially designed to correct astigmatism along with overall vision during cataract surgery, offering complete vision correction.
Toric IOLs are available as variants of our High Definition Monofocal, Enhanced Lifestyle, and Extended Range lenses.
