Detached Retina Treatments

Surgical treatment is usually required for repair of a retinal detachment.

The details of the surgery will depend on the type and extent of the detachment. You may have a scleral buckle sutured onto the outside of the eye, or you may have a vitrectomy to remove the vitreous gel from within the eye. Gas or oil my be injected into the eye. Laser or cryotherapy may be used to seal the hole in the retina. Your eye specialist will advise you on the details of your procedure.

Depending on the type of surgery, you may have to maintain a certain head position for a period of time following the surgery to ensure the gas bubble remains in the correct position.
