Pterygium Treatments

If the pterygium is causing irritation or discomfort, this may be resolved by the use of moisturising or soothing eye drops.

Surgical removal may be indicated for the following reasons:
  • Irritation, tearing and discomfort not eased by use of soothing eye drops
  • Distortion of vision by the pterygium
  • Cosmetic appearance
  • Inability to wear contact lenses
  • Doubt about the diagnosis e.g. suspicion of a cancerous growth

Surgical removal is usually done under local anaesthesia. The pterygium is excised and a graft taken from the conjunctiva, the membrane over the white of the eye. This is secured in place either with dissolvable sutures or with a tissue glue. Your eye specialist can advise you on your treatment options.
