Flashes and Floaters - FAQS

Q. If I have floaters, what should I do?

A. Most floaters are harmless. If you have recent or new floaters, particularly if associated with flashes of light and/or a shadow or curtain, you should see an ophthalmologist.

Q. If I have flashes of light, what should I do?

A. Flashes or flickering may be harmless e.g. migraine. They may also be associated with conditions such as retinal detachment or temporal arteritis. If in doubt you should be examined by an ophthalmologist.

Q. What should I be watching for in case of retinal detachment?

A. Light flashes.
"Wavy" or "watery" vision.
A veil or curtain obstructing part of your field of vision.
A shower of floaters that resemble spots, bugs, or spider webs.
A sudden decrease in vision.
