Blepharitis is a common inflammation of the eyelids, usually affecting both eyes. Bacterial infection may be present but is not always so.
Blepharitis can occur in people of any age, from children through to older adults. It is sometimes difficult to treat and tends to recur. It is occasionally associated with inflammation on the cornea (keratitis). Complete blockage of a gland can cause a small lid abscess or chalazion.
Blepharitis usually requires ongoing careful management, with lid hygiene practices needing to be integrated into daily habits for sufferers.
Symptoms:

Painful eyelids

Redness or swelling around the lid margins

Lids may be itchy and irritated

Foreign body sensation

“Frothy” or excessive tearing

Sensitivity to light, excessive blinking

Loss of eyelashes

Crusting of lashes in the mornings

Misdirection of eyelashes
